Carthaginian Sacred Band 3

Hi Guys,

Somewhat later than billed, but here is the 3rd chap in our Carthaginian Sacred Band set. This chap is in typically Hellenic style armour, with a metal cuirass and Corinthian style helmet pushed back on the head. His arm is raised, ready to be holding up a spear, or indeed brandishing a severed head of an enemy! The whole set has now been master moulded by the lovely fellas at Footsore Miniatures, and I’m hoping to receive some master casts very soon. I can then get some paint on them, and up in the webstore shortly.

I’ve also been working on the 3d printing process further, and have been using my Blood Bowl clown figures as a good testing ground. The initial scans and prints have come out really nicely I think! I’ll maybe keep the clowns to our Instagram feeds, so check them out if Blood Bowl and weird fantasy is your thing!

Carthaginian Sacred Band 2

I’m getting back in to the swing of dusting off sculpts and finally in to production. As promised last week, here’s figure 2 of the upcoming Carthaginian Sacred Band. With this chap we’ve gone for a more Eastern look, giving him Lamellar armour and an Assyrian style helmet, based on the artwork by Guiseppe Rava from the Osprey book ‘The Carthaginians’. 
The Carthaginians are a challenge for a producer like me, as they have a potentially vast array of troops to try and cover off, most of whom weren’t actually that effective and, as a consequence, don’t make it in to many people’s armies. However, I like the challenge and I think the forces of Carthage deserve the depth and variety available to other Ancient and Punic War factions! Let’s hope my optimism and enthusiasm isn’t misplaced 🙂
In other news, the team here have been making slow and steady progress with 3D scanning and printing, with a view to being able to take some of the production process of our minis in house. I’ll post a separate blog about that shortly! Next week, the Sacred Band reveals continue, along with Liny-Phoenicians and possibly Samnites after that.

Carthaginian Sacred Band

Morning All,
I’ve been quite quiet over the recent few weeks – as always day to day realities prevent me from spending as much time on miniatures as I would like. However, I am going to share something with you all today – a teaser of a set of figures that have been languishing in the dark recesses of Agema towers for far too long!
This chap is a Carthaginian in Linothorax – maybe a well armed Citizen Trooper raised in the defence of Carthage by Hannibal at Zama, or one of the Sacred Band; Carthage’s Elite volunteer warriors in the great tradition of the Theban Sacred Band and the Spartan Hippeis. Unfortunately the Sacred Band of Carthage don’t seem to have done as well as their name-sakes when it came to martial prowess (except, like the Theban Band, they seem to have died to a man on occasion!) This chap is one of a new set that will be available soon – hopefully along with the more ‘standard’ Citizen Infantry as I try to push and complete the Carthaginian range before turning to Gauls. More of his ‘pals’ next week. In the meantime, why not grab yourself a Hannibal or Carthaginian Command set in readiness for these forthcoming new arrivals?

Friend Requests on Facebook

Just a general admin post this week, although I’ve been meaning to put this out for a while. We get dozens of ‘Friend’ requests every week for Agema Miniatures, which is great, but it causes a potential problem.
When I first set Agema up, and created a Facebook page, I accidentally created Agema as a person, rather than a business. I realised my mistake and created a business page for Agema, but the old ‘person’ page still exists, and for the life of me I can’t seem to kill the old page off.
When you try and ‘Friend’ Agema, you are trying to Friend the old original ‘person’ page. The trouble with that is I don’t post anything on the old person page, everything goes up here, so you may well be missing out on any posts / info etc. etc. Much easier if you ‘Follow’ this page or ‘Like’ this page, rather than try and ‘Friend’ Agema.
I hope that makes sense but I’m sure someone far more au fait with all this Social Media gubbins will set me straight 🙂 And for all those outstanding Friend requests, it’s nothing personal I assure you!

Nubae now available!

I’ve just received the casts of the recently revealed Nubae, who are now available in our Webstore (link here: https://agemaminiatures.co.uk/product/nubae/ )
I haven’t had chance to get paint on these guys yet, but as many of you have been asking when they will be released, I’ve made them available ahead of painting up.
Whether or not Hannibal really took tribes of Nubae with him to Italy, these guys can make an interesting addition to any Carthaginian force, especially when fighting in Africa or Spain! I’m hoping to try and cover more of the Berber tribes that may have fought with Hannibal, as they rarely get looked at, and may well have formed a sizeable part of his force – at least in the early days. You can of course use them for other period Berber tribesmen – it seems their look may not have changed greatly over a very long period of time. Sacred Band Command

These chaps have been waiting in the wings for some time, and I have only just got around to adding them into the webstore – but now available! Sculpted by the ever talented Stavros Zouliatis, and painted by Artmaster Studios.
As Sacred Band, I’ve gone with a slightly earlier period feel for these guys, giving the Commander Lamellar armour and a bow, which seems to have been a symbol of nobility in Persian / Tyrean / Carthaginian culture. The standard bearer is wearing a studded Linothorax as shown in statuary, and instrument wise I’ve gone for the ubiquitous Cornicern, which all armies of the era seem to have used. There will be some Sacred Band troopers to go with these guys soon, but of course you can use them as an alternative Command stand for Hannibal’s war.

3D Printing – Take 2

I have continued to play with our Elegoo Mars printer this week, and with some help from those much more in the know than me, I managed to properly print (well, almost!) 4 figures out at 28mm. The figures were originally created as separate pieces, as I was thinking about using the 3D method for creating 3-Up masters, but having printed them out at 28mm, I’m thinking I can actually create complete / whole figures quite nicely at this scale.
These chaps are just some generic Hellenic types I have used as a proof of concept, but I think they look pretty good. I’ve really had my eyes opened to the potential of 3D printing, but more research is needed 🙂
You might notice some white marking on the figures, which is where I didn’t clean them up properly once printed, but it’s all grist to the learning mill. Next, I want to see how paint goes on these chaps (Oh, and I need to finish their arms off!!!)

3D Printing Experiment

I’ve been looking in to how I can get miniatures to market more quickly and cost effectively – relying on others to make moulds and cast for me means I can’t always get things done as quickly or as cost effectively as I would want.
Technology can be a game-changer, and I have been looking in to 3D printing. This chap is my first attempt (I should actually say my other half’s first attempt – she is the techno wizard!) This chap came out the wrong size due to us still getting used to the software – he’s about 40-45mm rather than 28. But I’m really quite pleased with him 🙂 We are going to print a few more components (more arms and heads) and see how he looks at 28mm, and also at 3-up / 90mm scale, should we ever want to produce our own masters for plastic production.
If we can get the 3D printing process right, I’m also going to try and design some figures and print them such that, not only will I be able to produce on demand, but also I can reduce the cost to both you as consumers and me (shorter lead times, no moulding/shipping, the resin is cheaper than metal etc. etc.) In theory, assuming we can get the quality right, a win-win for all.

Plastic Shields now in Store!

The plastic Thureos and Aspis / Hoplon shields are now in the web store! The Aspis / Hoplon if you remember has the left arm integrated, ensuring that the positioning of the rim on the shoulder is correct and making it much easier to position the shield on to a plastic figure body easily. The Thureos have no integrated arm, so can be mounted to many many figures (not just our own :-))
I’ve included a few pics of how they can be used too.
